Writer & Publicist

Originally, I had planned to put this site together with all sorts of references to “Deanne’s work” and “Deanne’s accomplishments”, as if written by some third party who had intimate knowledge of the inner workings of Deanne’s mind and Deanne’s business ventures.

But since writing in the third person is too creepy and hiring a scribe is too expensive, I opted to do it myself. I love writing.

I love a good Helvetica font. I love thesauruses. I love parking myself in my hula chair and working on projects until the wee hours of the morning.

So…

What do I do, exactly?

I write magazine articles. I teach public speaking, publicity and writing, at the college level. I research and create reports on business and financial journalists. I ghost write for a newspaper columnist. I do a lot of bios. I'm a publicity consultant to TV stations, “personalities”, and small businesses. I also contribute to articles that focus on abuse, in general, and more specifically on the topic of people who puree your mind, like sociopaths and narcissists. It's a downer cause, when compared to hipper issues like global warming and gay marriage, but it's important.

Punctuation and grammatical rules ain’t my bag, baby - that’s why God invented editors. I’m not an editor. If you’re an editor, please proof this and get back to me on all the things that need revision.

As far as education goes, I’ve got a Master’s degree in Communication from Pepperdine University. I went there on a full academic scholarship, which means there is no way I could have lived and learned in Malibu if I had to pay for it myself. I did my undergraduate work at the University of Delaware. Perhaps you’ve heard of them? The Fighting Blue Hens. In a world of Bulldogs, Hurricanes and Knights, it’s pretty embarrassing.

My childhood dream was to become a “Tah Dah” girl for The Price is Right. That hasn’t happened (yet). Instead, I’ve worked as a Disney tour guide, a production assistant at the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, a morning radio co-host, a news director, and a TV publicist. As a fill-in entertainment reporter, I once interviewed Robin Williams, Christian Slater and Emilio Estevez. If you ever run into them, ask about me.

I’m a Jersey girl at heart. I have big hair and a Springsteen CD collection. I’ve also got three kids who are the center of my universe. They are the coolest people I know.

On a completely different note, if you dig the idea of plus-size women wrestling in coleslaw, check out my “Tacky Fabulous” blog – a guide to all the weird stuff in Central Florida. It spotlights everything from school bus demolition derbies to nudist resorts … flamingo poop candy to vomit art exhibits. Meeting Planner’s International Magazine profiled me in their May 2008 issue, calling me “The Carl Sagan of the Tacky Fabulous universe.” There was also some connection drawn between me and the Black Plague, but you can read the whole article for yourself right here.
